Venture Capital & Mentorship Committee Member

Road to Silicon V/Alley is a program at Rutgers focused on developing pathways to begin successful innovation careers as entrepreneurs or intrapreneurs. Throughout the program, students attend site visits to successful start-ups, technology firms, and cutting-edge corporate innovators. Successful Rutgers alumni and friends in the innovation fields lead workshops that supplement understanding of applied technology. Students form mentor relationships with these alumni and friends, who support their progress through the program. Students will learn multiple different sects of business and what leads to successful intrapreneurship and entrepreneurship.

  • Venture Capital Committee. Janice developed and organized the 2020 Rutgers Undergrad Venture Capital Case Competition by closely brainstorming and working with Professor Mukesh and her committee members. Janice outreached and pitched to venture capitalists, startup companies, keynote speakers, and sponsors to build traction and value for the event and led design for the event brochure to be presented to the Business School's dean for approval. Although the event was postponed to the next university semester due to university closings, she can't wait for everyone's hard work to shine in the upcoming semester.

  • Hult Prize Competition. Janice entered the global Hult Prize Competition alongside her fellow RSVP teammates and formed Moove, a transportation company that aims to mitigate toxic runoff and methane levels by working with farms and biofuel companies. Janice and her team worked closely with the Hult Prize Advisors, Professors, and Industry mentors at Rutgers and won 3rd place at the Hult Prize Campus Competitions. Her team was invited to pitch at Regionals at Monterrey, Mexico. Read more about her team and her journey here!

The Entrepreneurship and Innovation LLC is a first-year program for students who embrace and thrive on creativity, innovation, and big ideas. The program allows students to immerse themselves in entrepreneurship and provides opportunities to take an idea from conception to a business plan.  LLC members have exclusive access to classes not available to first-years, as well as provides mini-grant funding for projects and business ventures. The LLC also has exclusive trips to entrepreneurial events and keynote speaker sessions. After enjoying her first year at the LLC, Janice will continue her participation into the 2nd year of the LLC experience as a mentor.

Throughout the conference, Janice had the pleasure of learning valuable lessons from keynote speakers (from Reddit, Janice VC, Kickstarter, to Y Combinator) and talking to startup tents and hearing out their journeys from prototype to market.  She also had the opportunity to pitch her own ideas and network with fellow aspiring entrepreneurs.

  • Discovery Leadership Program. Janice had the privilege to attend the Discovery Program where she was first introduced to the LLC and engaged in a two-day leadership session for up-and-coming entrepreneurs. She visited Grow with Google's Headquarters in New York City to learn about identifying, approaching and solving problems, as well as learning how Google's growing influence and application of technology and software is changing everyday education and lifestyle. Janice and her LLC also visited Ironbound Boxing in Newark, NJ to watch and learn first-hand from its founder, Mike Steadman, on how he kicked-off his boxing ring with bootstrap entrepreneurship, outreach and branding, community, and dedication to the youth.

  • Exclusive Courses.

    • Janice and her LLC peers took Introduction to Entrepreneurship with Professor Gary Minkoff their first semester, where they learned the frameworks for understanding the entrepreneurial process, including discussions of leadership, strategy, marketing, finance, operations, human resources, supplier management, facilities, and regulatory considerations. After enjoying the class and Professor Minkoff's mentorship, she went on to take Managing Growing Ventures during her second semester to consult for and create an Implementation Plan for a small business.
